We recently asked our youth mentors to fill in an Impact Report so we could provide a way for them to track their annual impact, and so we could gather this data as a community.

Not everyone filled it in of course, but the data showed that if only one-third of our graduates are actively working with youth right now (which is conservative) then 8000+ teens are being mentored around the world each year. How amazing is that?!

When I started Shine From Within 13 years ago, running workshops for about 10 students at a time, I could never have imagined now being part of a community of grass-roots, youth mentor organisations in 30+ countries having this kind of impact.

And it all began by people reaching out to me to “pick my brain,” asking things like:

  • “How can I start a youth mentor business like yours?” and
  • “What do I need to be a youth mentor or life coach for teens?” and
  • “Are there specific qualifications I need to run workshops for young people in my community?”

Those few questions lead to years of gathering content, interviewing experts around the world and developing what is now our award-winning Youth Mentor Training.

And while it’s fun to see that number: 8000+ teens being mentored and supported, it’s not just about the numbers. Here are some of their biggest wins:

Holly, in a small town in Canada said, “HeartSpark had several kids who aged out of programming but wanted to stay. They encouraged me to try a teen pilot, which is currently running. We continue to expand every year.“

Jenny, in Australia said,“I’m celebrating the moments where young people have grown in self-belief, stayed engaged with school or community, tried something new, or felt safe enough to open up.Being trusted to walk alongside them during important stages of their lives is incredibly meaningful to me.

I’m also celebrating my own consistency and commitment — showing up, listening, and continuing to give back in ways that align with my values.”

Marie-Claude, in Dubai, said her biggest win was realising “the power of music and arts to beat anxiety and depression.”

I’ve never been much of a numbers person. I’d much rather support one person deeply, than speak to thousands. And gosh these stories remind me of why this work matters so much.

However you’re connected to youth – as a parent, educator, mentor, or someone who cares – I’m so grateful you’re part of this community too.
