Why this matters now
You know your students better than anyone. You know what they’re dealing with already. And the data is sobering.
In 2025, headspace surveyed more than 3,000 young Australians and found that nearly half were experiencing high or very high levels of psychological distress.
The Resilient Youth Australia Resilience Survey, drawing on responses from around 140,000 students nationally, found that 35.9% of secondary school students report high levels of anxiety, depression, or both. And between 40–50% of students reported high levels of disengagement and falling levels of hope, across all ages and genders.
For female students in particular, Australian research found that nearly 1 in 5 adolescent girls reported clinically significant body dissatisfaction – a figure consistently linked to appearance-focused content online. And with Australia’s Social Media Minimum Age legislation passing in November 2024, schools are increasingly being asked: what are we actually doing to help young people navigate their digital world?
Shine on the Inside® has an answer to that question. And it’s already been working in more than 100 schools across Australia and internationally, including schools in the US, Dubai and Bali.

According to Headspace, 49% of young Australians were experiencing high or very high levels of psychological distress in 2025.

The curriculum is designed to feel different…
It covers the topics young people most need to navigate adolescence well: mindfulness, self-esteem and resilience, friendships, body image, understanding how their brain works, nutrition, menstrual wellness, digital literacy, self-leadership, nervous system regulation so they have tools in place before they get really stressed and goal setting. All in one program. All done for you.
It’s designed to feel nothing like a standard school lesson. The room is set up differently. There’s music. Students sit in circle. There are real conversations, creative activities, and moments that stay with them.
“The Shine from Within program at Ingleburn High School was a resounding success during Term 1 for both Year 7 and Year 8 students. The sessions were not only engaging and interactive but also left a lasting impact on the participants. Students responded positively to the program’s content, actively participating in discussions and activities. Shine from Within proved to be a valuable addition to our school’s offerings, empowering students with essential life skills and fostering a positive school culture.”

Teacher-approved, Teen-approved, Parent-approved!
“My girls are loving the program. Should be finished in the first 2 weeks of next term. I am hoping to do the program myself with my girls and our female Aboriginal students and their mums/grandmas/aunties next year too!”
“They are both happy in their own company, embrace their uniqueness and don’t feel pressured to fit in with the popular groups because they know they are just fine just as they are.”
“The program was brilliant and I highly recommend to parents for all girls. [It’s] empowering the girls to love and believe in themselves and take care of themselves and not get caught up in all of the hype, pressures and negative influences that they will be faced with in today’s world. We are very fortunate to have had this course at our school.”
“I actually started it with two different small groups last week. I thought it would be a nice way to wind down the year.
The girls and I are enjoying it so far. I predict we will continue to do so and I have the program booked in to continue throughout 2023!”
“You have topped up her confidence right at a time when she will need to stay strong with the new school year.”
“Myself and our schools psychologist have run your program 2 times with 2 different groups of yr 9 girls so far.
The values lesson both times was our favourite – the value story is brilliant!
Thanks so much, I myself have enjoyed facilitating your program, it’s definitely beneficial and a positive program to run in schools.”
“Everything we covered throughout it is still of huge help to me today, and I’m sure it will be forever! It really helped me and it was all an absolutely amazing experience!”
How to deliver it
Our flexible curriculum allows you to choose how you deliver it.
- Select up to 10 lessons to deliver in weekly sessions (they’ll work for 45mins – 90mins sessions).
- Run the sessions for smaller groups, during class or as a lunch time or after school program.
- Run them in the classroom or find a spot outside to facilitate it.
- Or combine a few lessons to deliver a half or full well-being day.
The best part is, the work is done for you. Follow the steps to create an empowering and nurturing experience for your students.
“We’ve created the perfect curriculum. It’s prescriptive enough to teach directly from the resource, but with enough flexibility to put your own stamp on it if you want to. We really wanted to make sure you can hook the sessions in with your own school’s values and ethos as well as be able to express your own passions if there’s a topic in here you want to dive deeper into.”

The 2026 edition – what’s new
The 2026 edition is the most comprehensive update since the program launched. The original curriculum was already working beautifully in schools across Australia and internationally. This update brings it fully in line with where young people – and the research – are right now.
A brand new Digital Literacy module
This is the update schools are asking for most urgently. Australia’s Social Media Minimum Age legislation has opened up an important conversation about how young people navigate their digital world – and schools are looking for curriculum that actually helps them do that well. We can’t just ban them, we have to prepare them. And in Shine on the Inside style, we start this lesson with an engaging story to help them get clear on their values first. A lot of research and a lot of fun has gone into this updated lesson – one that gives students real critical thinking tools appropriate for the age you’re delivering to.
The new content covers how algorithms work (and why they tend to serve up content that makes us feel worst about ourselves), AI-generated images and synthetic media, digital footprint and data privacy, the research distinction between passive and active screen use, and a values-first framework for students not yet on social platforms. It references the eSafety Commissioner throughout – Australia’s leading government resource for digital safety education.
Full ACARA Version 9 alignment
Every lesson now includes complete V9 curriculum codes, content descriptors and Personal and Social Capability sub-element mapping for Years 5–10. The documentation is already done. Curriculum coordinators can use it directly.
A strengthened evidence base throughout
Every lesson has been audited against current research. Specific updates include self-compassion added as a companion to self-esteem (drawing on Kristin Neff’s research), updated adolescent neuroscience in Lesson 5, body image content updated with current peer-reviewed citations, nutrition content reviewed to align with intuitive and mindful eating frameworks, and goal-setting in Lesson 10 now explicitly aligned with Oettingen’s WOOP model – the most evidence-supported goal-setting approach in the field.
This is not a generic wellbeing program. Every activity is grounded in evidence and designed specifically for adolescents. But only you’ll know that – the content is fun and engaging. You can just feel confident that it’s rooted in research.

Is this suitable for co-ed schools?
The curriculum is designed with girls and young women at its centre – particularly content around body image and menstrual wellness. Many co-ed schools deliver it to female-identifying students within a pastoral care or HPE setting. Content around mindfulness, friendships, brain science, digital literacy and goal-setting is broadly relevant to all students.
Do facilitators need specialist training?
No. The 2.5-hour video training inside the members portal is designed for any caring, committed adult – regardless of their professional background. Many facilitators tell us it’s one of the most meaningful things they do in their teaching week.
What does the school license cover?
One licence covers your entire school community – no per-student fees, no annual renewal. Schools purchase once and run the program year after year. Digital resources are updated via the portal.
For the first time since we launched the curriculum 6 years ago, we’ve completed a significant research review and update, offering an updated physical binder to schools who already had the curriculum at a significant discount. Other than that optional upgrade, there are no additional fees.
If you’re purchasing now, you are already going to receive the new version.
Is this ACARA-aligned?
Yes. The 2026 edition includes complete ACARA Version 9 alignment across all 10 lessons — content descriptors, focus areas and Personal and Social Capability sub-element mapping for Years 5–10. The documentation is ready to include in your curriculum records.
How is it different from other wellbeing programs?
We can’t speak to what other providers deliver but we understand that most school wellbeing programs fall into one of two camps: clinical and intervention-focused (requiring specialist staf, often expensive, not designed for the regular classroom), or surface-level and hard to sustain.
Some programs are government funded, others church-led…ours doesn’t have an underlying agenda. Just decades of facilitation experience and strong research backing.
The updated Digital Literacy module is a genuine point of difference: very few programs have responded to Australia’s social media legislation with structured, values-grounded curriculum content.
Is this a mental health program?
No. Shine on the Inside® is a preventative wellbeing and life skills program – not a clinical intervention. It is designed to build vocabulary, skills and self-awareness in students who are doing well, so they continue to do well. Schools are actively encouraged by Australian health bodies to invest in exactly this kind of preventative approach.
Where is it in use?
In more than 100 schools across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia – and internationally in schools in the US, Dubai and Bali. Primary schools, high schools, public and private – we’ve had great feedback from them all!
